Open Letter

Community leaders of New Hall and Sutton Coldfield have written an open letter to the Boundary Commission of England

Dear Sirs,
Sutton Coldfield is the largest Parliamentary Constituency in Birmingham. It covers just over one fifth of Birmingham’s administrative area and it is the most northerly Constituency, bordering Staffordshire and Warwickshire countryside to the north and east. The Boundary commission for England proposes to move the ward of New Hall from Sutton Coldfield constituency to Erdington and replace it with the same sized ward of Kingstanding. The removalof New Hall jeopardizes the unity of historic Sutton Coldfield and attacks it’s identity as a constituency characterized by parkland and open space.

Sutton Coldfield is a distinct town which has grown up around the historic manors and a deer park stretching back to the 13th Century and beyond. These manors, including Langley, New Hall and Peddimore are located, or have been located within the current ward and district of New Hall. Removing New Hall from Sutton Coldfield constituency would mean removing the roots of this proud district.

Sutton Coldfield boasts two urban nature reserves and the UK’s only urban National Nature Reserve. Thus it is characterized by open space for wildlife and conservation. This character is similarly reflected in the leafy suburban districts that surround the parks with large mature gardens. The loss of New Hall ward would see the removal of both urban nature reserves from the constituency and the loss Sutton’s claim to be characterized by open space for wildlife. In short the change would effect the identity of Sutton Coldfield.

We strongly oppose this move which effects our towns heritage and current identity and urge you to keep the entirety of New Hall Ward within Sutton Coldfield constituency.

Your Sincerely
